Deep beneath the Mendip Hills, this lesser-known cave system offers a proper underground adventure without the tourist crowds that pack nearby Wookey Hole. The limestone chambers stretch for several hundred metres, with some genuinely impressive stalactite formations and a couple of pools that reflect your torch beam beautifully. It's raw caving rather than a sanitised visitor experience - you'll need to bring your own lighting and prepare to get muddy.

Serious cavers and geology enthusiasts will love the authentic feel, though families with young children might find it a bit challenging. The entrance can be tricky to locate without local knowledge, and there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. Allow at least two hours if you're planning to explore properly, and go with someone who knows the system well.

Wells makes a good base for exploring this part of the Mendips, sitting just a few miles away with its magnificent cathedral. The cave works well as part of a Somerset adventure holiday - several holiday parks dot the area around Wells, from basic camping at Cheddar to the more luxurious Strawberryfield Park lodges. Just don't expect this to be your main family attraction. It's more of a bonus adventure for those who fancy something genuinely off the beaten track.
