Wookey Hole Caves

Underground passages carved by the River Axe over millions of years snake through limestone deep beneath the Mendip Hills. Wookey Hole's network of caves stretches further than most visitors realise - twenty-five chambers in total, though only the first few are open to the public. The guided tours take you past dramatic rock formations and underground pools, with tales of the infamous Witch of Wookey thrown in for good measure.

Families with younger children seem to love the mix of genuine geology and slightly theatrical storytelling. The caves maintain a constant cool temperature year-round, so bring a jacket even on scorching summer days. Above ground there's a Victorian paper mill, circus memorabilia, and various other attractions that feel a bit random but keep everyone entertained.

Wells makes a proper base for exploring this corner of Somerset, sitting just two miles away with its stunning cathedral. Cheddar's famous gorge and caves lie just down the road too, making this prime territory for underground adventures.
