Medieval streets wind through this proper Kentish market town, where the River Medway curves past ancient castle walls and Georgian townhouses line the high street. Tonbridge feels refreshingly real - no tourist traps here, just a working town that happens to have bags of character.

The Norman castle ruins dominate the town centre, though it's the gatehouse that really catches your eye. Wander down to the river and you'll find decent pubs overlooking the water, plus the start of several footpaths into the surrounding countryside. The high street has that pleasant mix of independent shops and familiar chains that keeps a town ticking over.

Heading out into the Kent countryside reveals why this area's so appealing. Hadlow Castle and its distinctive tower make for a decent walk, while the village greens around Matfield offer proper rural tranquillity. The landscape here is classic Kent - rolling fields, hop gardens, and ancient parish churches like All Saints' at Tudeley tucked into quiet valleys.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. The train from London takes about 45 minutes, and you're well connected to the rest of Kent by road. It's close enough to Maidstone and Royal Tunbridge Wells for day trips, but far enough out to feel properly rural.

Staying at one of the camping spots or glamping sites scattered around the area makes perfect sense. You get the best of both worlds - easy access to Tonbridge's amenities and pubs, plus you're right in the heart of some lovely Kent countryside for proper walks and cycle rides.
