Tewkesbury

Two rivers meet here in a collision of currents that shaped medieval England. The Severn and Avon converge at Tewkesbury, creating the flood plains that once made this Gloucestershire market town strategically vital. Today, the same waters that brought prosperity centuries ago still define the landscape - though these days they're more likely to flood the car parks than determine battle outcomes.

Tewkesbury Abbey dominates the skyline, its Norman tower visible for miles across the vale. This massive structure survived Henry VIII's dissolution simply because locals bought it as their parish church. Smart move. The abbey's fan vaulting rivals anything at Westminster, and the medieval streets radiating from it feel properly ancient.

Flooding remains a fact of life here. The Ham, Tewkesbury's ancient common meadow, regularly disappears underwater during winter months. Rather than fight it, locals have embraced the cycle - the saturated grassland makes for excellent walking when dry, and the regular inundations keep development at bay.

Croft Farm Water Park offers a different relationship with water entirely. This former gravel pit has been transformed into Gloucestershire's answer to the Lake District - on a much smaller scale, obviously. The lakes here are popular with sailors and anglers, while the surrounding parkland provides decent cycling routes.

By car, junction 9 of the M5 puts you minutes from the town centre. Ashchurch for Tewkesbury station connects to Birmingham and Bristol, though the walk into town takes a good twenty minutes. The surrounding countryside rolls gently toward the Cotswolds in one direction and the Malvern Hills in the other, making this an excellent base for exploring both ranges. Several holiday parks dot the area, taking advantage of those river valley views while staying sensibly above the flood line.
