Tenbury Wells sits quietly in Worcestershire's northwestern corner, close enough to the Welsh border that you can practically taste the mountain air. This old spa town never quite became Bath, and that's precisely its appeal.

The high street retains that proper market town feel - independent shops, a decent butcher, and locals who actually stop to chat. Tuesday's market brings the place to life, though midweek it's wonderfully sleepy. The town earned its spa credentials from chalybeate springs discovered in the 1830s, though these days it's better known for mistletoe - they crown a Mistletoe Queen here each November, which is either wonderfully eccentric or slightly bonkers, depending on your outlook.

St Peter & St Paul Church dominates the town centre with its distinctive spire, while the surrounding countryside unfolds in that gentle Worcestershire way - rolling hills, apple orchards, and the kind of winding lanes that make satnav weep. Birch Hill offers cracking views across the Teme Valley if you fancy a proper walk. The river itself is lovely for a gentle stroll, especially downstream where it curves past old mills.

Getting here means winding through country roads - the nearest train station is actually over in Ludlow, about twenty minutes by car. But that journey through hop fields and past timber-framed farmhouses is half the pleasure.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're ideally placed for exploring the Marches - that atmospheric borderland between England and Wales - while having somewhere peaceful to return to after days spent discovering ancient churches and wandering riverside paths.
