Stowmarket

There's something properly Suffolk about Stowmarket - a working town that hasn't dolled itself up for tourists yet still manages to feel authentically English. The market square might not win any beauty contests, but it's got character, and the weekly markets still draw locals from the surrounding villages.

Walk five minutes from the centre and you're in proper countryside. Rolling fields stretch towards the horizon, broken by ancient hedgerows and the odd church spire. The landscape here is gentle rather than dramatic - think Constable paintings rather than Wuthering Heights moorland.

Calvors Brewery sits just outside town, doing proper craft ales that you can sample in their taproom. It's the sort of place where the brewer might chat about hops over a pint. Less obvious but oddly compelling is the Tractor in a Tree - yes, really - which has become something of a local landmark since a farmer decided to hoist his old Massey Ferguson into an oak tree back in the 1990s.

Village signs dot the countryside like breadcrumbs. Ashbocking, Framsden, and Henley each have their own carved wooden markers telling local stories. These aren't grand tourist attractions, but they're part of what makes Suffolk special - communities proud enough of their history to commission proper craftwork.

Churches provide another thread through the landscape. St Mary at Helmingham and St Mary at Framsden both warrant a look, especially if you appreciate medieval architecture without the crowds.

Getting here is straightforward enough - Stowmarket station has regular services from London Liverpool Street and Ipswich. The A14 runs close by for drivers.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. You're close enough to explore the town's shops and cafes, but far enough out to wake up to birdsong rather than traffic. Plus, having a proper base means you can explore the surrounding villages at your own pace.
