The ancient market town sits comfortably in the heart of Staffordshire, where Georgian terraces line quiet streets and the River Sow meanders through water meadows. This isn't your typical tourist hotspot - and that's precisely its appeal.

Stafford moves at its own steady pace. The town centre clusters around the imposing Victorian Shire Hall, while the Ancient High House - England's largest timber-framed townhouse - stands as a reminder of the place's medieval prosperity. Beyond the shopping streets, things get properly rural rather quickly.

Countryside enthusiasts will find plenty to occupy a long weekend. Loynton Moss offers excellent birdwatching across its wetland reserve, while Cop Mere provides a lovely spot for a gentle walk around the water's edge. The remnants of Ranton Abbey tell stories of monastic life, though there's not a great deal left standing. More unusual is the growing trend for alpaca farms - both Pumpkins & Alpacas and Tunstall Barns Alpacas offer encounters with these endearing South American imports.

Basing yourself at one of the nearby holiday parks makes excellent sense for exploring both Staffordshire's countryside and the wider region. You're well positioned for day trips to the Potteries or even the Peak District fringes. The M54 junction puts the Shropshire hills within easy reach too.

Getting here couldn't be simpler. Stafford railway station connects directly to London Euston in just over an hour, while the M6 motorway runs right past. For a proper taste of middle England without the crowds, you could do far worse.
