About Ryde

The ferry deposits you right at the end of Ryde Pier, and straight away you know you're somewhere different. This Victorian seaside town sprawls along the island's northeast coast, its esplanade lined with grand terraces that have seen better days but retain their faded elegance. The pier itself stretches nearly half a mile into the Solent - one of Britain's longest - and feels properly old-school with its train line running right down the middle.

Ryde's beach stretches for miles in both directions, though it's more pebbles than sand at high tide. Low tide reveals acres of firm sand that's brilliant for walking or letting the kids run wild. The town centre has that slightly sleepy island feel - independent shops mix with the usual suspects, while the esplanade cafes do a roaring trade in ice cream and chips.

Art lovers shouldn't miss Becky Samuelson Fine Arts or the Aqualibrium Art Gallery, both showcasing local talent. For something completely different, Wight Knuckle Brewery crafts excellent ales just outside town. The nearby Selwyn Marina brings a touch of maritime glamour, while Holy Trinity church offers a peaceful respite from the seafront bustle.

Getting here couldn't be easier - regular ferries from Portsmouth drop you right in the town centre. The surrounding countryside rolls gently inland, dotted with traditional Isle of Wight villages and footpaths. Staying at one of the holiday parks nearby means you're perfectly placed for both Ryde's seaside pleasures and the island's spectacular walking country. Plus you can easily reach Bembridge to the east, with its lifeboat station and pretty harbour making for a lovely afternoon trip.
