About National Trust - St Helens Duver

St Helens Duver is a proper coastal headland on the Isle of Wight's eastern edge, just outside Ryde. The National Trust manages it, and what you're really coming for is the walk itself - a stretch of shingle beach backed by low cliffs with decent views across the Solent. It's not dramatic or towering, but it's genuine and unspoilt.

The appeal here is straightforward. Walkers get a couple of hours of genuine beachcombing without the crowds you'd find elsewhere on the island. The shingle is firm and walkable, and you might spot the old coastal defences from World War II if you know where to look. Families with younger kids might find it a touch bare - there's no facilities to speak of, no ice cream van, no entertainment beyond the sea itself. For older children who actually enjoy walking, though, it's miles better than the honeypot attractions.

You can park near the village and walk down; allow a couple of hours if you're doing it properly. There's no admission charge. Timing-wise, go on a clear day when the weather's decent - grey drizzle turns this into a fairly grim trudge. Winter walks are magical if you're the type, but summer is more forgiving.

It pairs well with staying at White Cliff Bay or Sandhills, both within spitting distance, or Isle of Wight Coastal Park if you want something with proper facilities. The eastern side of the island tends to be quieter than the south, so if you're after escape rather than entertainment, this works.
