Pickering

Steam trains still chuff through this North Yorkshire market town, carrying passengers along the same tracks that once served Victorian holidaymakers. Pickering feels properly lived-in rather than tourist-polished, with a working high street and locals who'll chat about the weather at the bus stop.

Pickering Castle dominates the town centre, its Norman keep watching over centuries of comings and goings. The ruins are more atmospheric than pristine - ivy creeps up ancient walls and you can still make out the great hall where medieval lords once held court. It's a proper castle, not a Disney version.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway departs from Pickering's heritage station, and the journey to Whitby through Levisham is genuinely spectacular. Steam billows across heather moorland as the train climbs towards the coast. Even cynics find themselves grinning like children.

Beyond town, the landscape opens into the Vale of Pickering - flat farming country that stretches towards the Wolds. Crown Wood offers decent walking, while the archaeological remains at Cawthorn Roman Camp reveal just how long people have found this area worth settling in. Black Howe provides evidence of even earlier inhabitants.

Getting here is straightforward enough - Pickering sits on the A170 between Thirsk and Scarborough, about 25 minutes inland from the coast. The market town makes an excellent base for exploring both the moors and the seaside, with holiday parks dotted around the surrounding countryside offering everything from traditional camping to glamping pods. You're close enough to nip to Whitby for fish and chips, yet far enough from the crowds to actually park the car.
