Cawthorn Roman Camp D

The Romans left their mark all over Britain, but most folk never actually see where they camped. Cawthorn Roman Camp, just outside Pickering, changes that. You're standing on ramparts built nearly two thousand years ago - proper lumpy ground that still shows the defensive ditches and banks the legions dug out. There's not much to excavate your imagination about, mind you. No standing stones, no dramatic ruins. What you get instead is the raw geography of Roman military thinking: why they chose this spot, how they dug in, what they were defending against.

The site itself is open grassland with clear earthworks you can walk around. Spend an hour here and you'll see four separate camps overlapping - different periods, different armies. History buffs will find it genuinely interesting; families with young kids might find it a bit abstract unless someone's keen on archaeology. The nearest proper town is Pickering, which makes this a natural add-on to a bigger park-based holiday in the area. It's free to visit and accessible without booking. No facilities on site, so bring water. The best time is spring or autumn when the grass is shorter and you can actually trace the earthworks properly. Don't expect a visitor centre or gift shop - this is archaeology as it should be: you, the ground, and your own sense of discovery.
