Cawthorn Roman Camp

Walk across moorland near Pickering and you'll stumble upon earthworks that Roman soldiers threw up nearly 2,000 years ago. Cawthorn Roman Camp isn't a polished visitor centre with glass cases and interactive displays - it's the real thing, left largely as archaeology found it, which makes it rather special.

The site consists of two Roman camps laid out across the heathland, their defensive ditches and ramparts still visible if you know what you're looking at. A guide helps enormously here, because without one you're essentially looking at bumps in the ground. That said, there's something genuinely moving about standing where legionaries once stood, particularly if you've got even a passing interest in Roman Britain. The landscape around it is proper lovely - open moorland that gives you a real sense of how exposed and remote this posting would have felt.

Historians and keen walkers will get the most from this. Families with young children might find it a bit abstract unless they're already engaged with Roman history. You'll want to allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough. It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though winter can be boggy.

The camp sits well within a broader North Yorkshire heritage walk - Pickering itself is only a few miles away and worth a proper explore. Several caravan parks cluster nearby, including Lakeside, Cliff Farm Holidays, and Westgate Carr Farm, so you could easily base yourself for a few days and tackle this alongside other local sites. Don't expect manicured gardens or clear information boards. Expect genuine archaeology and a bit of effort.
