About Peterborough

Just a few miles south of Peterborough proper lies a slice of North Northamptonshire that feels properly rural, despite being on the doorstep of a major cathedral city. The landscape here rolls gently between ancient woodlands and open fields, with the remnants of Rockingham Forest creating pockets of deep green that have survived since medieval times.

Old Sulehay Forest NR offers some of the best walking in the area - proper ancient woodland where you can lose yourself for hours among oak and ash. Ring Haw provides another excellent ramble, while Great Byards Sale and The Oaks give you that lovely sense of stepping back in time. These aren't manicured country parks but genuine working landscapes.

History buffs will find plenty to occupy them. The Glen Miller Pillar marks a poignant wartime connection, while Kings Cliffe Airfield Memorial tells stories from the Second World War. More peaceful are the ancient churches scattered across the countryside - the Church of All Saints and St James, St Leonard's at Apethorpe, and the Church of Saint Mary each worth a look for their architecture and atmosphere.

Wartime buildings dot the landscape too, reminders of when this quiet corner was rather busier. Even the Village Stocks survive, though thankfully no longer in active use.

Getting here is straightforward - you're just off the A47 with Peterborough station nearby for rail connections. Staying at one of the local holiday parks like Rockingham Forest Park or Ferry Meadows puts you right in the heart of this countryside, close enough to nip into Peterborough for supplies but far enough out to feel like you've properly escaped.
