Bedford Purlieus Woods

The ancient woodland here feels properly remote despite being barely twenty minutes from Peterborough. You're walking through one of England's oldest forests - Bedford Purlieus has been managed woodland since medieval times, and it shows. The trees are massive, the canopy dense, and the whole place has that quiet, undisturbed quality you only get when a landscape has been left largely alone for centuries.

It's a walker's destination first and foremost. The network of paths takes you through mixed woodland - oak, ash, birch - with clearings that open onto surprisingly open views. Spring is exceptional if you can time it right; the woodland floor comes alive with bluebells and wild garlic. Summer's thick and cool, autumn proper golden. Winter is fine too, just muddy.

HistoryBuffs will appreciate the medieval timber management still visible in how the woodland's structured. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour - there's no obvious "attractions" within the woods, just trees and paths. That said, teenagers and proper walkers will happily spend half a day here.

You'll need to check locally for access points and parking arrangements, as facilities aren't always advertised. It's free to walk, though. If you're based at Rockingham Forest Park or any of the nearby glamping sites - The Nest is closest at under three miles - this is a natural morning or afternoon outing. Pair it with a walk around Peterborough or head toward Stamford for lunch.
