Land speed records were born on this stretch of Welsh coastline, where Malcolm Campbell first chased glory across Pendine Sands in the 1920s. The seven-mile expanse of firm sand still draws petrolheads to the Museum of Land Speed, though these days it's more about dog walkers and fossil hunters than record attempts.

Carmarthen feels properly Welsh - the sort of market town where conversations happen in both languages and the pace slows right down midweek. The high street has that lived-in quality you don't find in tourist hotspots, with proper local pubs and family-run shops that have weathered decades of change.

Pendine Sands remains the main draw. At low tide, the beach stretches endlessly, firm enough to drive on but brilliant for long walks. The Museum of Land Speed tells the tale of those early speed demons, though it's a bit niche unless you're into motor racing history.

Quieter souls might prefer Eglwys Cymmin, the Ancient Church of St. Margaret, which sits peacefully in the countryside. It's a proper old Welsh church - simple, atmospheric, and mercifully free of coach parties. Pendine Chapel offers another slice of local history.

The Fountain of Life provides a curious landmark worth tracking down, though don't expect anything too grand.

Getting here from Cardiff takes about an hour and a half by car, with the A40 doing most of the heavy lifting. The surrounding Carmarthenshire countryside rolls gently towards the coast, all green fields and scattered farmsteads. Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense - you're close enough for easy beach access but far enough from any crowds to enjoy proper peace and quiet.
