Climbing to the top of this modest hill near Pendine feels more like a proper mountain trek than the 50-metre height suggests. The path winds through bracken and gorse, muddy after rain but well worth the effort for what awaits at the summit.

From up here, the Carmarthen Bay stretches out below in a sweeping arc. On clear days you can spot Caldey Island floating offshore and the distant outline of the Gower Peninsula. The beacon itself is little more than a concrete trig point, but the 360-degree views are cracking - especially towards the Preseli Hills inland.

Families with older children will manage the walk easily enough, though it's not pushchair-friendly and gets slippery when wet. Allow an hour for the round trip from the car park near Marros village. Early morning visits often reward you with mist hanging over the valleys below.
