Ballater

Royal connections run deep here - this is where the Queen spent her summers at nearby Balmoral, and you can feel that regal influence in the well-maintained Victorian streets and proper tea shops. Ballater sits in the heart of Royal Deeside, surrounded by some of Scotland's most dramatic Cairngorms scenery.

The town itself is compact and walkable, with a lovely railway station that's now a heritage centre (the royal train used to terminate here). Local shops still display their royal warrants with pride. But it's the surrounding peaks that really steal the show - Lary Hill and Mammie offer cracking views without being too strenuous, while serious hikers can tackle the more challenging ascents like Sgor na h-Iolaire or The Coyles of Muick.

Getting here from Aberdeen takes about an hour along the A93, following the River Dee through increasingly wild countryside. The drive itself is half the pleasure, especially in autumn when the birches turn golden.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. Ballater Caravan Park puts you right in town, while Braemar Caravan Park is handy for exploring further into the Cairngorms. The area rewards slow exploration - you'll want several days to properly tackle the hill walking, visit Balmoral Castle (when it's open), and soak up that Highland atmosphere. Deeside's reputation for clean air and dramatic scenery isn't marketing fluff. It's the real deal.
