About Creag Ghiubhais
This is very much a walker's hill. The approach isn't technical, but it's unrelenting in places, and you're looking at a solid two to three hours for a round trip depending on fitness. It's not the sort of thing to drag reluctant teenagers up unless they're already keen on hiking. The terrain is moorland and rough grass - good boots matter here, especially after wet weather when it turns into a bog.
You won't find a visitor centre or facilities at the top. No cafe, no toilets, no shelter - just you and the view. Bring water and snacks. Early autumn is probably the best window, when the weather's more stable and the midges have backed off a bit.
If you're basing yourself at Howe of Torbeg or Ballater Caravan Park - both excellent sites within three miles of the town - this makes a solid half-day outing combined with exploring Ballater itself. It's the kind of hill that doesn't need to be overcomplicated. Go up, enjoy the space, come back down.
