Abergeldie Castle

The castle sits on the banks of the River Dee just outside Ballater, a proper fortress that's been standing since the 16th century. You can't get inside - it's still privately owned and not open to the public - but the exterior is worth driving past, especially if you're exploring this stretch of Deeside. The setting is genuinely lovely, with woodland backing onto the castle and the river running below. It's the kind of place that stops you mid-drive and makes you reach for your camera.

Historically inclined visitors will find it interesting as part of the broader Aberdeenshire story, though you're really looking at a drive-by experience rather than a proper visit. The castle itself is substantial and photogenic from the road, but don't expect to wander the grounds or peer through windows - the owners are protective of their privacy, which is fair enough.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Howe of Torbeg or Ballater Caravan Park - it takes minutes to drive here. Both are well-rated spots for a Deeside holiday, and this makes a reasonable addition to a morning's drive-about, combining it with Ballater itself and perhaps heading further up the valley toward Braemar. Allow twenty minutes tops if you're stopping for photos. Best visited in late afternoon when the light catches the river properly, and spring or autumn when the woodland colours are doing something interesting.
