Yewtree Hanger

You'll find yourself walking beneath towering beech and yew trees so dense the light filters through in green-tinged patches. Yewtree Hanger is a proper woodland hanger - the sort of steep, wooded hillside that Sussex does brilliantly - and it's the kind of place that rewards a decent pair of boots and an hour or two of your time.

The main draw here is the walk itself rather than a single viewpoint or visitor facility. The trees are genuinely old, gnarled things that make you feel small. It's ancient woodland, which means you'll spot bluebells in spring if you time it right, and the canopy provides real shelter even when it's baking hot elsewhere. The ground is uneven and roots snake across the path, so it's not a casual stroll - but that's precisely why it doesn't feel overrun.

This works best for walkers and anyone who actually enjoys being in woodland rather than just photographing it. Families with younger kids might find the steep sections tedious unless they're the outdoor type. Allow 90 minutes to two hours and don't rush it.

It's a natural add-on if you're staying at any of the caravan parks dotted around Chichester - Chichester Lakeside or Graffham are both within striking distance. The town itself is just four or five miles away, so you can combine this with a market wander without eating up your whole day. Free to visit, no facilities on site, so bring water. Best visited autumn to spring when the undergrowth isn't oppressive.
