Yew Hill

The walk up Yew Hill rewards you with proper views across Hampshire's rolling chalk downs, and it's the sort of place locals know but day-trippers miss entirely. It's not a dramatic summit - more of a high point than a peak - but the perspective changes noticeably once you're up there, especially on clear days when you can trace the landscape all the way toward Winchester.

The hill itself is relatively modest in height, which means it's accessible for families with kids who aren't seasoned hikers yet. The paths are well-trodden but can get muddy, so proper footwear matters. Allow a couple of hours for a steady amble up and around, though you could stretch it to three if you fancy a longer loop through the surrounding countryside. Historically minded visitors will appreciate the ancient yew trees that give the hill its name; they're genuinely old and add a bit of gravitas to what's otherwise a straightforward country walk. The whole thing sits about five miles from Winchester, making it a natural afternoon break if you're based at Hookpit Farm or Winchester Morn Hill - both reasonable enough options, though Hookpit has the better reviews if you're fussy about facilities.
