Hockley Railway Viaduct

The red-brick arch of Hockley Railway Viaduct stops you dead in your tracks the moment you round the bend near Winchester. Built in the 1880s to carry the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway across the valley, it's a proper bit of Victorian engineering - four massive spans rising from the Hampshire countryside like something from a railway enthusiast's dream.

You can walk right underneath it, and that's where the real appeal lies. Stand beneath those arches and you get a genuine sense of the engineering that went into the thing - the craftsmanship, the sheer audacity of building something this substantial when you didn't have the machinery we do now. The brickwork is impressive up close, and photographers will spend a good 20 minutes finding angles here.

It's not a destination that'll eat up half your day. You're looking at 30 minutes, maybe 45 if you're the sort who reads plaques and takes notes. The walk to get there is pleasant enough, skirting through farmland, but it's not a dramatic ramble. Families with young kids will find it interesting in small doses - there's something about massive Victorian structures that captures their attention, even if they can't quite explain why.

Winchester's just a few miles away, making this an easy add-on to a broader park holiday. If you're staying at Holden Farm or Hookpit Farm, both within striking distance, this makes a decent morning walk before heading into town proper. Free to visit, obviously - it's just standing there being imposing.
