Westgate Museum

Winchester's medieval gatehouse tells the story of a city that mattered. The Westgate Museum sits inside what's actually one of England's last surviving city gates - built in the 1380s and still doing its job, holding back traffic and history in equal measure. You walk up narrow stone stairs to rooms that explain Winchester's role as a royal capital and Saxon stronghold. The views from the top are proper worth the climb, looking down onto the High Street where kings once walked.

It's small - genuinely small - so you're looking at maybe 45 minutes if you read everything, less if you just want the views and a quick look at the medieval bits. Families with older kids do well here because there's something tangible about standing inside a 600-year-old building rather than reading about it behind glass. History types will appreciate the artefacts and explanations, though it won't consume your afternoon.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan sites - Holden Farm is particularly well-reviewed - you can slot this in before or after exploring Winchester Cathedral or the High Street shops. It's genuinely walkable from Hookpit Farm or Winchester Morn Hill too, no need for the car. Worth a visit on a rainy afternoon or when you fancy a quick culture fix without the museum fatigue. Just don't expect the crowds of bigger attractions.
