Yearsley Woods

The woodland around Yearsley, just north of York, is proper lovely if you want to escape the city walls without actually leaving the area. You're talking mature trees, open rides running through beech and oak, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place.

It's straightforward walking territory - nothing technical, just good paths that let you amble about without thinking too hard. The woods have that typical North Yorkshire feel: rolling enough to keep things interesting, but not so steep that you're knackered after twenty minutes. Allow an hour or two depending on how long you fancy mucking about. There's something oddly absorbing about the place even when there's not a dramatic view to work towards.

Families with kids will get on fine here - it's safe enough for them to run about, and there's enough woodland to explore without it feeling like a trudge. History types might appreciate the old estate connections, though don't come expecting ruins or plaques. This is more about the landscape itself.

The real appeal is how close it sits to York yet manages to feel remote. Perfect if you're staying at The Hideaway@Baxby Manor or Ravensdale Glamping Retreats nearby - you can do a morning here and still have the afternoon for proper attractions. Combine it with a walk into York itself and you've got a decent day's outing. Bring decent shoes though; it can get boggy after rain.
