High Wood

You'll find yourself among proper old woodland just outside York - the kind of place where the light filters through in that particular way that makes you forget the city's only a few miles back. High Wood is a straightforward forest walk, nothing fancy, but it does the job if you're after some green space without the crowds.

The trees here are dense enough that you feel genuinely away from things, which is the main appeal. It's the sort of spot where walkers will appreciate a decent hour or so wandering the paths, working out the geography as you go. Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited - there's no visitor centre, no obvious focal point, just woodland. Older children who don't mind a ramble will be fine though.

Access appears to be free, and there's no obvious admission charge. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking it slowly, less if you know where you're going. Come early on a weekend to avoid bumping into every other local with the same idea.

Staying nearby, you've got decent options within a few miles - Hewn Yorkshire is barely two miles away, so you could combine this with exploring York itself. Stablefell Holidays sits at under four miles if you want something slightly further out. The forest works best as part of a wider York visit rather than a destination in itself, but if you're based at one of the local parks and need a walk that doesn't require driving, it's worth knowing about.
