Yearns Low

The walk up Yearns Low is short but steep, rising 356 metres above the Cheshire plains near Macclesfield. You're looking at perhaps forty minutes from the car park depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath - and you will stop.

What makes it worthwhile isn't the summit itself, which is moorland rather than dramatic, but the views back across Cheshire on a clear day. On a grey day, it's honestly a bit underwhelming. The path is well-trodden and muddy in places, especially after rain, so decent boots matter. Peak baggers will appreciate it as part of a broader Pennine ridge walk, but on its own it's a bit thin.

Families with older kids (ten-plus) will manage it fine. Younger ones might find the steady climb tedious without the payoff of a proper viewpoint or café at the top. It's the sort of walk where you're doing it for the exercise rather than arriving anywhere remarkable.

If you're based at Eastwood End Caravan Park or Buxton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it fills a morning well enough. It's free and unrestricted - park sensibly at the base and go. Best visited in autumn or spring when the moorland grasses show colour and you're not battling midges.

Honestly, there are sharper peaks nearby worth your time. This one's fine for a quick outing, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your holiday.
