Yarmer Beach

The moment you round the corner into Yarmer, you understand why locals keep quiet about it. This is a proper working beach - no amusement arcades, no tat, just sand, rocks, and the sort of light that makes you squint into the estuary. It's tucked away near Kingsbridge, accessible enough if you know where to look, but far enough off the beaten track that you won't fight crowds even in summer.

What you get is a beach that changes character with the tide. Low water reveals shingle and sand where you can actually set up for the day without feeling hemmed in. The water's cold - this is Devon, not the Caribbean - but swim-able in summer months. It's the kind of place where kids can scramble about on rocks without you having a heart attack, and walkers appreciate the quietness and the views back towards the estuary.

There's a car park and basic facilities, though nothing fancy. Allow an hour or two if you're just testing it out, half a day if you're serious about beach time. Go when the tide's on your side - check the tide tables before you visit, genuinely. This beach isn't about one perfect moment; it's about having the place almost to yourself.

Both South Devon Camping Lower Terawhiti Farm and Karrageen Caravan & Camping Park are within a couple of miles, making Yarmer a natural stop if you're based in the area for a proper seaside week. It rewards the effort of finding it.
