Yards Hill

Yards Hill is one of those walks that sounds grander than it actually is. Yes, it's technically a peak in Hampshire, but calling it a mountain would be generous - you're looking at a modest woodland climb near Ashurst that rewards you with decent views across the New Forest if the weather plays ball.

The walk itself takes the best part of an hour depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. It's proper forest terrain: rooty paths, the occasional muddy patch, and enough gradient to remind your legs why you don't do this every weekend. Once you're up there, you get some decent vantage points over the surrounding heathland and trees, though it's not the kind of panorama that'll make you weep. Children do fine here if they're reasonably active - it's engaging enough without being a brutal slog.

This works well as a half-day addition to a New Forest holiday. Pair it with a campsite like Ashurst Campsite or Matley Wood, both within easy striking distance, and you've got a solid morning sorted before heading off to explore the broader park. The forest around here is lovely for casual wandering too, so you can turn it into a longer day if you fancy.

No fees that I'm aware of, and you can do it any time. Weekday mornings are quieter if you want to avoid the weekend crowd. Wear proper boots though - the mud here doesn't forgive trainers.
