Irons Hill

Standing at just 146 metres above sea level, this modest peak won't challenge serious hikers but delivers surprisingly good views across the New Forest heathland. The walk up from Ashurst takes about 20 minutes through mixed woodland and open heath - proper countryside that feels miles from anywhere despite being close to the village.

Families with older children will enjoy the scramble to the top, though it's not pushchair-friendly and little ones might find the terrain a bit much. The summit itself is marked by a triangulation point and offers decent panoramas on clear days, stretching across to the Solent and beyond.

What makes this worth the effort is how it fits perfectly into a New Forest holiday. You're literally on the doorstep of the national park, with several campsites within easy reach including Matley Wood and Hollands Wood. It's an excellent warm-up walk if you're planning bigger adventures deeper into the forest.

Being common land, there's no admission fee and you can visit year-round. Spring and autumn are particularly lovely when the heather and gorse put on a show. Allow an hour for the round trip from Ashurst, longer if you fancy exploring the surrounding heath. Not spectacular, but a proper slice of English countryside that's well worth the walk.
