Yard Steel

Yard Steel is a fell walker's peak that sits about 3 miles north-west of Keswick, and it's a straightforward climb that rewards you without demanding Alpine-level fitness. The ascent is proper doable in a morning, with views across the northern lakes that open up as you gain height. The top sits at 477 metres - not going to blow anyone away on paper, but the vantage point over Blencathra and towards Skiddaw makes it worth the effort.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a scramble, not technical, just a solid hill that feels like proper fell-walking without the knee-destroying descent you get from some of the bigger peaks. You're looking at around two hours up and back, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take photos. The surrounding terrain is open moorland, so wind can be a factor - wrap up on blustery days.

Getting here from one of the nearby campsites is painless. Kestrel Lodge Campsite and Carrock Glamping Pods are your closest bases, both within a few miles. From Keswick itself, head north and you'll find parking near the starting point without much faffing about.

It works brilliantly as part of a longer fell-walking itinerary around Keswick. Pair it with a morning on Blencathra or slot it in between bigger days - it's the sort of peak that keeps you moving without draining you. Clear weather is essential if you want those views to justify the climb; on a clag day, honestly, you might struggle to know why you bothered.
