Y Glon

Cloud shadows race across the grassy flanks of this modest hill, though Y Glon delivers far better views than its 1,181-foot height suggests. The summit sits south of Machynlleth, offering a proper workout without the technical challenges of higher Welsh peaks. Most walkers approach from the eastern slopes, where sheep tracks weave through bracken and gorse before opening onto surprisingly expansive moorland.

Families with older children will find this a manageable day out - reckon on three hours for the round trip including a good break at the top. The final push demands a bit of scrambling over loose rock, but nothing that should worry anyone with decent boots. Views stretch across the Dyfi Valley on clear days, with glimpses of Cardigan Bay if you're lucky.

Walking groups rate Y Glon as an excellent warm-up before tackling Snowdonia's bigger challenges. The summit cairn marks a lovely spot for lunch, though wind can be fierce even on calm days lower down. Best avoided in poor weather when the exposed ridge becomes properly unpleasant.
