Wymondley Wood

The woodland here, just outside Hitchin, is properly quiet - the sort of place where you actually hear birds instead of traffic. Wymondley Wood is a small nature reserve that punches above its weight if you know what to expect. You're looking at mixed woodland with a decent network of paths, manageable for a Saturday morning ramble without needing the full hiking kit.

Walkers will appreciate the ease of it. The paths are well-trodden but not rammed, and it's the kind of spot where a couple of hours works perfectly - enough to clear your head without feeling like a chore. Spring and early summer are when it earns its keep, with bluebells doing their thing and birdlife actually giving you something to watch. If you're into spotting woodland birds or just want somewhere local to stretch your legs, you won't be disappointed.

It's free access, which helps justify the visit from a caravan or campsite base. Radwell Lake is barely four miles away, making this an easy detour if you're staying there or at Henlow Bridge Lakes further out. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour or so - there's no playground nonsense or attractions, just trees and paths. But if you've got teenagers or proper walkers in tow, it's exactly what you need when you want to escape the campsite without a massive expedition.
