Hampson Park

The moment you step into Hampson Park, you're on proper wetland. Reeds, water channels, and the sort of quiet that makes you actually notice birdsong - it's the kind of place where you'll see why people get obsessed with twitching. Located just outside Hitchin, this nature reserve does what it says on the tin: protects a chunk of Hertfordshire's dwindling wetland habitat, and lets visitors walk through it.

It's genuinely good for families with older kids or teenagers who don't mind a bit of mud. Younger children can get restless on the boardwalks if nothing's moving, but on a decent day you'll spot mallards, possibly herons, and if you're lucky, something rarer. The paths are flat and manageable, though waterproof boots aren't a bad shout depending on the season.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Jacks Hill Caravans or Almshoe Glamping are both within 2.5 miles - this makes a solid half-day outing without feeling like a tourist trap. It's free, as far as I can tell, which takes the pressure off. Don't expect visitor facilities or a cafe; bring your own tea and snacks. Go early morning for the best chance of seeing wildlife properly active, and allow a couple of hours to do it without rushing. Worth the detour if you're into nature, less so if you're looking for something with activities or play areas. On a grey afternoon it can feel a bit bleak, so timing matters.
