There's a proper woodland walk waiting for you just outside Hitchin at Willian Arboretum - essentially a collection of mature trees spread across peaceful grounds that feels worlds away from the town centre. You wander through different sections, spotting various species planted over decades, which gives the whole thing a calm, educational quality without feeling like work. It's free to visit and won't take more than an hour unless you're the type to linger and identify every tree you pass.

The appeal depends entirely on what you want from a walk. Serious tree enthusiasts will find plenty to occupy them - there are good specimens here, particularly if you catch it in spring or autumn. Families with young kids might find it a bit low-key; there's not much to actually do beyond walking, no playground or tearoom to break things up. But if you're staying at Baldock Park Homes down the road and fancy a gentle morning stroll that doesn't require serious hiking boots, it works perfectly well.
