Wye Valley National Landscape

The Wye Valley National Landscape stretches across Herefordshire in a way that makes you realise why the Victorians went mad for this part of the world. It's not a single attraction with gates and a gift shop - it's the whole sweep of river, woodland, and rolling hills that runs from Ross-on-Wye down towards Monmouth, taking in some genuinely spectacular countryside along the way.

Walkers will have the time of their lives here. The river corridor is laced with proper trails, from the riverside path at Symonds Yat (where the views are actually as good as the postcards suggest) down through densely wooded sections that feel genuinely wild. History buffs get a kick out of the ruins - Goodrich Castle sits in the landscape like a proper medieval footnote, and there are traces of old iron workings if you know where to look. Families with younger kids might find some stretches a bit relentless underfoot, though there are easier riverside sections that work fine for pushchairs on good days.

It's free to wander, which is the beauty of it - no admission charges, no opening hours nonsense. Allow anything from a couple of hours for a gentle amble to a full day if you're tackling serious mileage. Spring and autumn are cracking times to visit; summer gets busy and winter can be muddy.

If you're camping at Doward Park or Bracelands just down the road, you're essentially in it already. The valley is the point - the walks, the views, the sheer relief of being somewhere that feels properly remote even though Ross-on-Wye is only minutes away.
