Symonds Yat Rock - Forestry England

The view from Symonds Yat Rock stops you dead. You're standing on a limestone crag some 500 feet above a horseshoe bend in the River Wye, and on a clear day you can see for miles across Herefordshire's green hills. It's genuinely spectacular - the kind of spot that explains why the Victorians came here in droves and why people still do.

You can walk up to the viewpoint for free, though the path climbs properly - it's steep in places and takes about 20 minutes from the car park. Once you're up there, the effort vanishes. The rock itself is a natural platform, and benches dot the view for those who want to sit and absorb it. There's a small café nearby if you need refuelling, and on weekends it gets busy, so go early or on a weekday if you can.

This works brilliantly as part of a wider Forest of Dean or Wye Valley walk. Doward Park Campsite sits less than a mile away, so it's ideal if you're camping locally. The forest walks around here are top-notch - you could easily spend a full day exploring, though the rock itself is a quick visit if you're just after the view and the photos.

Histor buffs might appreciate knowing this is one of the most famous vantage points in the Wye Valley, but honestly, you don't need to know anything about it to get the point. The landscape speaks for itself. Worth the short climb, and much better than scrolling through other people's pictures of it.
