Goodrich Castle

The red sandstone walls of Goodrich Castle rise dramatically from a wooded spur above the River Wye, and the moment you spot them through the trees you understand why this 12th-century fortress commanded such respect. It's a proper medieval stronghold - not a ruin you have to imagine your way around, but a castle that still tells its story through intact towers, a keep you can actually climb, and walls thick enough to make you understand the engineering behind medieval defence.

The setting near Ross-on-Wye is half the appeal. You approach through farmland, cross a small bridge, and suddenly there it is against the wooded valley. Inside, you can wander the battlements, explore the kitchens and chambers, and get a genuine sense of how people lived here across centuries. History buffs will spend a solid two hours; families with younger kids might manage 90 minutes before legs start complaining. The climb to the top of the keep is steep but worth it for the views across the Wye.

Admission is charged, and English Heritage runs the place, so expect typical opening hours and facilities. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Doward Park or Broadmeadow are closest, though neither stands out as exceptional - Goodrich makes an excellent half-day excursion. Combine it with a riverside walk or a pint in Ross-on-Wye town itself, and you've got a proper day sorted. The castle demands respect rather than affection, but that's precisely what makes it worth the visit.
