Wycoller Country Park

The old packhorse bridge at Wycoller is the real draw here - a proper piece of medieval engineering that still carries walkers across the beck after more than 600 years. The country park wraps around it, giving you moorland walks, woodland paths, and a genuine feel of how the Pennines used to look before the industrial sprawl claimed so much of Lancashire.

You're looking at a half-day affair, maybe three hours if you dawdle and take the longer loops. The paths vary from easy riverside rambles to steeper moorland climbs, so families with younger kids can manage the flat bits without exhaustion. History enthusiasts will appreciate the ruins of Wycoller Hall tucked into the landscape - it inspired Charlotte Brontë's Ferndean Manor, which adds a bit of literary frisson if that's your thing. The ruins themselves are atmospheric but not overly dramatic.

It's free to wander and there's decent parking. Go mid-week if you can - weekends pull in the crowds from across the North West. The autumn light through the valley is particularly good. Spring's wet, so decent boots are essential year-round.

If you're based at Trawden Forest Glamping or Shay Gate Farm Campsite just down the road, this makes an effortless morning walk before heading back for lunch. It's not a standalone destination worth a long drive, but as part of a broader Pennine explore - including the nearby parks - it's a solid addition to the itinerary. Real walkers and history types will get more from it than families after a quick stroll, if I'm honest.
