WWI RMLI Gun Battery

You're standing on a windswept bit of Highland moorland near Ballachulish, looking at the concrete gun emplacements that once held Royal Marine Light Infantry artillery. It's one of those sites where the landscape does most of the talking - low bunkers half-buried in heather, positioned to command what would have been a strategically vital strip of water during the First World War.

The battery itself is modest. No grand fortifications, no visitor centre with interpretive boards. What you get instead is the raw fact of it - four gun positions arranged across rough ground, with views that stretch toward Glencoe and remind you why this particular patch of Scotland mattered enough to defend. The concrete's cracking now, weathered after a century, but it's still there.

This works best for serious history types and walkers. If you're expecting manicured museum grounds or a cafe, you'll be disappointed. Allow an hour to poke about, photograph, and contemplate what the men stationed here were actually doing in 1914-18. It's free and accessible year-round, though the exposed position means weather can turn quickly.

If you're based at Invercoe Caravan Park just down the road, it's a decent half-day jaunt that pairs well with walks in the Glencoe area. Don't expect to spend all day here, but don't skip it either if you're interested in the quieter corners of WWI Scotland. It's the kind of place that sticks with you precisely because it doesn't try too hard.
