WW2 Mulberry Harbour unit

A hulking concrete caisson sits on Hayling Island's foreshore, looking rather like an outsized building block that's been abandoned mid-construction. This is one of the few remaining Mulberry Harbour units - the prefabricated breakwater sections that were towed across the Channel after D-Day to create temporary ports for the invasion of Normandy. Seeing it in person drives home just how audacious the whole operation was. Engineers built these things by the hundreds, flooded them to sink into position, and somehow managed to keep supply lines flowing to an entire invasion force. The structure itself is weathered and graffitied now, but that somehow adds to the impact rather than detracting from it.

Historically minded visitors will find it genuinely moving - this isn't a reconstructed display, it's the actual thing, still marking the spot where it was assembled. Kids might lose interest after ten minutes unless you've got them primed with stories about World War Two beforehand. It's free to view from the beach, though there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards, so you'll want to do your homework before heading over.

It sits nicely within a longer Hayling Island outing. The island itself has proper seaside appeal - arcades, fish and chips, a pier - and if you're basing yourself at Hayling Island Holiday Park or Mill Rythe Coastal Village, it's barely a walk away. Worth combining with a broader explore of the island rather than treating it as a standalone stop. Allow twenty minutes, maybe longer if you're photographing it or the light's doing something interesting.
