Wroxeter Roman City

The stone foundations of a once-thriving Roman fortress rise from a Shropshire field like the bones of something vast and forgotten. Wroxeter Roman City, just south of Shrewsbury, was Viroconium Cornoviorum - a garrison town that housed up to 6,000 soldiers during the 1st and 2nd centuries. Walking the site today, you're treading on layers that span nearly two millennia.

What strikes you first is the sheer scale. The bath house remains are substantial enough to understand how the Romans actually lived here - the hypocaust heating system still visible beneath your feet. The museum on site holds pottery, coins, and tools that make the place feel inhabited rather than archaeological. You'll spend a good two to three hours picking through foundations and reading interpretive boards, though history enthusiasts could easily stretch that to half a day.

Families with restless children might find it heavy going - there's walking involved and ruins demand some imagination to bring alive. The site sits about five miles south of Shrewsbury, making it an easy addition to a Shropshire touring holiday. Condover Park and Ebury Hill Camping are both within a short drive, so you could base yourself at one of the local caravan sites and tackle Wroxeter as a morning or afternoon excursion. Go midweek if you can - weekends bring crowds, and this place deserves quiet contemplation.
