The woodland around Wristed Wood offers proper walking territory if you're based near Maidstone. It's the sort of place where you can lose a solid two hours without really trying - decent paths wind through mixed woodland, and it feels properly removed from the town bustle despite being just outside it.

This is woodland for people who actually enjoy walking rather than those after a quick Instagram spot. The forest floor can get boggy after rain, and the paths aren't manicured, which is entirely the point. You'll see sessile oaks, birch, and the kind of scrubby undergrowth that makes you feel like you've wandered somewhere real. Kids who are into bug hunts and building dens will get more from it than those expecting a theme park experience.

There's no visitor centre or café, so bring your own provisions. Allow at least ninety minutes if you're properly exploring, though you could do a quick circuit in forty-five. Go mid-week if you want to avoid dog walkers and local runners who've clearly claimed the place as their own.

If you're camping at Chegworth Mill Glamping or Painters Farm, both are within five miles - close enough for an easy morning walk before breakfast or an evening stroll. It pairs well with the looser structure of a park holiday, especially if your base has proper amenities and you want to get out into actual woodland rather than another managed attraction. The Maidstone area has plenty of these smaller woods scattered about, but Wristed Wood holds its own.
