Worth Park Gardens

The gardens at Worth Park sprawl across genuinely good walking country just south of Haywards Heath, and they're the sort of place you'll stumble upon by accident and then wonder why you haven't been back since. It's a nature reserve, so the manicured bits give way quickly to proper woodland and open space - which is exactly what makes it work.

What you get here is straightforward: trails through mixed woodland, open grassland, and the chance to actually see what Surrey countryside looks like when it isn't a golf course or someone's back garden. The walking is easy enough for families with younger kids, though the paths can be muddy after rain. Allow an hour minimum if you're just pottering about, longer if you want to do the full circuit without rushing. There's genuine wildlife here too - you'll spot birds and if you're quiet enough, possibly deer.

Historically minded types will get something out of knowing the grounds have proper roots, though Worth Park isn't a destination for grand house tours or anything theatrical. It's more understated than that.

If you're camped at Gatwick Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just 2.4 miles away, or glamping at Worth Forest, this makes an excellent half-morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's free to access and there's no time limit, which removes the pressure entirely. The real value is in the simplicity - a proper walk through actual woodland without having to drive hours to find it. Not Instagram-famous, and all the better for it.
