Worm's Head

The walk out to Worm's Head takes about twenty minutes across the golden sand at Rhossili Bay, assuming the tide's in your favour - and this is absolutely crucial to check before you set off. Get it wrong and you'll be stranded on the rocky outcrop, which has happened to plenty of folk over the years. The headland itself is a dramatic finger of rock jutting into the Bristol Channel, with proper jagged cliffs and a spine of stone that narrows as you venture further out. Views back towards Swansea are outstanding on a clear day.

It's brilliant for walkers with a head for heights, though families with young children should think twice about the scrambling involved. History buffs will appreciate the Iron Age fort remains dotted along the peninsula, though there's precious little interpretation on site. Allow two to three hours for the full experience, but honestly, if you're not confident on the rocks or the weather's turning, there's no shame in admiring it from the beach instead.

There's no charge to visit, which is the only sensible arrangement for somewhere this temperamental. The nearest proper facilities are back in Swansea itself. If you're based at one of the caravan parks on the Gower - Broughton Farm or Gower Farm Touring are both reasonable - Rhossili is a short drive and perfect for breaking up a camping holiday. Just respect the tide and you'll have a memorable afternoon.
