Worms Head

Dylan Thomas called it 'a mile-long rock of Noah's Ark' and he wasn't wrong. This mile-long tidal island jutting out from Rhossili Beach on the Gower Peninsula is only accessible at low tide, making it one of Wales' more adventurous coastal walks.

The crossing itself is properly exciting - you're scrambling over rocky causeway and pools, with the sea on both sides. Check tide times religiously because you'll be stranded for hours if you get it wrong. The rocky scramble takes about 20 minutes each way, and once you're on the 'Head' proper, there are decent views back across Rhossili Bay and out towards Devon on clear days.

Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of clambering will love this, but it's not pushchair territory by any stretch. The rocks can be slippery when wet, so proper walking boots are essential. Allow at least three hours return, including time to explore the island itself.

Rhossili village is the jumping-off point, about 20 minutes from Swansea. Several holiday parks dot the area if you're making a proper Gower break of it - Pitton Cross and Hillend are both within easy striking distance. Just remember: this isn't a gentle seaside stroll. It's a proper coastal adventure that rewards the bold with some cracking Welsh wilderness.
