The memorial at Turnaware Point marks where thousands of Allied soldiers embarked for D-Day operations during World War II. It's a modest but genuinely moving spot overlooking the Fal estuary near Truro, where the sheer scale of what happened here - the logistical feat of moving men and materiel across the Channel - becomes somehow more real when you're standing on the actual ground.

You won't find much in the way of visitor infrastructure here. What you get is a memorial and views across water that saw extraordinary activity in 1944. History types will find it absorbing; families with young children might struggle to hold their attention for long unless they've already developed an interest in the period. The walk is easy enough and the location itself is pleasant, though it's the historical weight rather than the scenery that's the draw.

Allow thirty minutes unless you're planning to linger and read the inscriptions properly. There's no visitor centre, so go on a decent day - wind and rain don't improve a reflective visit. It's free to access.

If you're basing yourself at Trethem Mill Touring Park or Carnon Downs just down the road, this is well worth the short drive as a break from campsite routine. Veryan Camping and Caravanning Club Site, further south, makes it a reasonable detour if you're exploring the wider Roseland Peninsula. Don't expect crowds or facilities - that's rather the point.
