King Harry Ferry

The chain ferry crossing the Fal River near Truro is one of those wonderfully pointless journeys that somehow becomes the highlight of a day. You drive your car onto a flat barge, the ferryman winds you across on a cable, and five minutes later you're on the other side. That's it. That's the whole thing. But it's brilliant.

It's been operating since 1888, which means generations of Cornish families have made this same crossing, and there's something rather satisfying about that continuity. The river views are decent enough - wooded banks, the occasional boat - but you're not here for postcard moments. You're here because it actually works, because it's still the quickest way to reach Veryan and the quieter parts of the Roseland Peninsula without a forty-minute detour inland.

Families with young kids will find it endlessly entertaining. There's something about being on water that holds their attention in a way no visitor centre ever could. Older children might get restless if the queue's long, but it rarely is. The whole crossing takes about five minutes each way.

It's free to cross if you're on foot, though car rates apply for vehicles - worth checking current prices before you go. Allow ten to fifteen minutes if there's a queue, though off-season crossings can be nearly instant. Summer weekends draw more traffic.

If you're staying at Trethem Mill or Carnon Downs, the ferry makes a natural morning excursion to reach the Veryan beaches and coastal paths beyond. It's the sort of thing you'll come back to year after year without planning to.
