Woolacombe Sands

Three miles of golden sand stretch along this spectacular stretch of North Devon coastline, and frankly, it's one of the finest beaches in Britain. Woolacombe Sands delivers everything you want from a proper seaside day out - excellent surf, rock pools at low tide, and enough space that you won't be sitting on top of other families even in peak summer.

Surfers absolutely love it here. The waves are consistent and the beach faces west, catching Atlantic swells beautifully. If you're just starting out, there are several surf schools operating from the beach. Families with younger children should head towards the southern end near the village, where the sand is more sheltered and the waves gentler.

The walk down from Woolacombe village is steep but short - about ten minutes from the car parks. Come prepared though, as facilities on the beach itself are limited to a couple of seasonal cafes. Pack your own refreshments and don't forget sun cream, as there's precious little natural shade on the sand.

It's brilliant for a full day out if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Woolacombe Sands Holiday Park or Ruda Holiday Park. The beach works well with little ones who can spend hours building sandcastles, while older kids and teens will be kept busy in the surf. Just watch those tides - they come in fast here.
