About National Trust - Morte Point

The walk out to Morte Point is proper Devon coastal drama - jagged dark rocks, seabirds wheeling overhead, and on a clear day you can see for miles. It's a National Trust headland just outside Woolacombe, and the main appeal is the walk itself rather than a building or facility at the end. The path follows the clifftop for about two miles round trip, taking in Barricane Beach on the way (a pebble beach that gets tropical shells washed up from the Gulf Stream - sounds unlikely but it's genuinely rare). The rocks themselves are dramatic without being treacherous, though it's windy up there and you'll want proper shoes.

Walkers will love this. You get real cliff walking, the kind where you feel you've earned your fish and chips back in Woolacombe. History types get a bit less - there's wreckage and a few remnants of old structures but nothing substantial to explore. Kids under eight might struggle with the distance and wind, though older children who can manage two miles of undulating path will think it's excellent. On a grey day it feels moody and atmospheric; on a sunny day it's honestly lovely.

Free to access, no facilities at the point itself so bring water. Allow two to three hours if you're taking photographs and stopping to catch your breath. It works brilliantly as a morning or late-afternoon outing if you're based at Golden Sands Touring Park or any of the other parks dotted around Woolacombe - close enough to pop to without eating up a whole day.
