Woolacombe Beach

Three miles of golden sand stretching out towards Baggy Point - that's what Woolacombe delivers, and it's genuinely one of Devon's best beaches for a proper day out. The sand is wide and firm, backed by low cliffs and a small village that's kept itself from becoming a tacky seaside town. You'll find the beach splits naturally into sections, so even in summer you can find quieter spots if you're willing to walk.

Surfers come here year-round for the Atlantic swells. Families with younger kids prefer the northern end near the village where there's more shelter. The southern stretches toward Baggy Point are wilder - better for long walks and spotting the occasional seal. There are lifeguards in summer and a decent selection of cafes and fish and chip shops backing onto the sand, though don't expect haute cuisine.

Allow three to four hours minimum, longer if you're walking to Baggy Point and back. The tide matters - check it before you go because the beach narrows considerably at high water. Parking fills up by midday in peak season, so arrive early or plan for an afternoon visit instead.

Golden Sands Touring Park sits just 0.8 miles away, making it an obvious base for a beach-focused week. Most of the other parks are within two miles, so you're genuinely spoilt for choice if you're taking a caravan holiday in the area. It's the kind of beach worth building a trip around, not just a quick stop-off.
